The Northern Map Turtle is Maryland’s only true river turtle. It is only found in the Susquehanna River in Maryland and its immediate tributaries. Although common in many parts of the United States, the Northern Map Turtle is considered an endangered species in Maryland, as a result of habitat loss from dam construction, pollution, over-collecting for the pet trade, and the impacts of predation from predators like raccoons. Townson University has been studying the ecology of the Northern Map Turtle in Maryland since 2008, and the primary goal of our research is to find ways of managing and conserving what is left of this fascinating species. Dr. Dr. Richard A. Seigel will provide an overview of that research, with emphasis on some of the major threats that the map turtle faces, with attention to the population here in Perryville.
