Elizabeth Rodgers

Tavern and Ferry Keeper
1795-1798

Elizabeth Rodgers was one of four women who held licenses for the tavern and the ferry. When her husband, John Rodgers, died in 1794, Elizabeth continued to lease the property from Samuel Thomas until 1798.  She also continued as the tavern and ferry keeper.  To the Cecil County Court Elizabeth paid £50 for the ferry license and 6,000 pounds of tobacco a year for the tavern license.  Additionally, the Court required two respected community members to guarantee that Elizabeth could run a respectable tavern and dependable ferry.  Her landlord, Samuel Thomas, and her son, Thomas Rodgers, performed this duty.

In 1799, Elizabeth, with her family and slaves, moved to Havre de Grace, Maryland.

Margaret Rogers marries Nathaniel Chew in Harford County.

Another record, same source, states Margaret Rogers married Nathaniel Chew on 11/19/1794 in Cecil County. This is unlikely because on 10/8/1794 in Col. Rodgers estate admin accounts, Margaret is identified as the wife of Nathaniel Chew.

Elizabeth's husband, John Rodgers, dies

The 1791 death year inscribed into re-cut grave marker at White Clay Creek Church, DE is incorrect.  It would have been impossible for John personally sell land to Pinkney two years after the death year inscribed on said grave marker.  Also, there are Register of Wills Admin Accounts for Col. Rodgers that start in April 1794.
