Joshua Richardson

Ferry Keeper
1814

Joshua Richardson, at the age of 32, received a one-year ferry license from the Cecil County Court on April 10, 1814.  A few days later, on April 18th, he and Richard Stockton of Baltimore County, Alexander Scott of Cecil County, Wiliam Anderson of Delaware County, PA, William Stockton of Philadelphia, PA and Zenes Wells of New Castle, DE bought the 4-acre tavern and ferry lot from Samuel and Tench Ringgold.

Joshua bought Alexander Scott’s one-fifth interest share in the property in 1831.  On May 1, 1832, he marries Mary Ann Scott daughter of Alexander and Hannah (Howard) Scott.  They have one child, Hannah.  After Joshua’s death in 1835, Hannah and her mother Mary Ann inherit his shares.  They become two of only eight women owners of the tavern and ferry property.
